#340 – Best Buy Trip

with 12 comments

On purpose, I drove to Best Buy to purchase something. Anything. I wanted a new thing. Call it a spasm of materialisticism (not a word) or whatever, but I wanted something. So I first went and looked at the DVD for Sin City, which is on my list for next movies to buy before other movies (it’s an ongoing process). There were two versions, one with no bonus features and one with a ton yet a higher price. I studied them, studied them like a college goer crams for his/her biology final three hours prior to it; I squinted and stared at the cases, turned them over in my hand endlessly…and then I put them back on the shelf and walked away.

Then I went and looked at XBox 360. I picked up the box that held the lime green videogame thing. It was heavy. Someone once told me the heavier a thing is, the more you’ll pay for it. I didn’t take too much time deciding that, no, I’m not going to buy it. Not now.

I spent the rest of the time drifting, watching others pick out their prizes. All their eyes said the same thing: MINE, MINE, MINE.

So why did I go out there? To waste an hour of my day? It really isn’t that I’m dead broke, but that I’d rather not go into debt. Also, I can’t help but feel horrible when I buy things I don’t need…

I guess it was a compulsion of sorts, a wanting of being out and being a consumer. Yet I failed. I returned empty-handed and I still don’t understand why…

This public musing has been brought to you by Paul, who is just waiting for the weekend to arrive.

When you’re walking downtown
Do you wish I was there?
Do you wish it was me?
With the windows clear and the mannequins’ eyes
Do they all look like mine?
