So yeah, this weekend was all bout NYC. First, I accompanied Tara to Drink and Draw Like a Lady…at least until the event started. Then I had to go find a way to occupy myself safely for a couple hours. I mostly sat on a bench and people-watched, but I also drank a lot of coffee at a small-yet-cozy diner.
Then the next day we returned to the city to hit up MoCCA. What a totally fun and rockin’ con! Definitely more up my alley than big boy Comic-Con ever was. Lots of zines and indies artists and just an overwhelming sense of art love. Got to see and meet a whole slew of great comic artists such as Pranas T. Naujokaitis, Box Brown, Hope Larson, Raina Telgemeier, Lucy Knisley, and plenty more! Got plenty to read, for sure.

Now you know that you are real
Show your friends that you and me
Belong to the same world
Turned on to the same word
– “Have You Heard” by The Moody Blues
We’re now, at least in New Jersey, in the middle of those few short weeks where the leaves are turning and everything is warmly cool and shops big and small are advertising pumpkin this and pumpkin that. Let’s stay for awhile, yes?
Wrapped up in the pleasures of the world
I’ve journeyed here and there and back again
But in the same old haunts I still find my friends
– “Thirty-three” by The Smashing Pumpkins
It’s here, people.
Should I get away
From the high heels so proud
Is there something different
Life can show me now
– “Love is Coming Down” by The Who
Us Abbamondi folk…we’re like everyday MacGyvers I tell you. I actually first suggested using the string on an extra air freshener in my car so I’m not totally perfect as a resourceful secret agent, but I promise I’m working on it.
Anyways, after the car problems were finished up, all of us went out to eat at Carino’s Italian Restaurant. We nom nomed, we caught up, and afterwards we all went our separate ways (well, not me–I stayed in my apartment for the evening). It was a very nice visit, all-in-all, and hopefully I’ll get down to South Jersey some time in September/October…
Give me all your stuff
Until I can’t get up
Watch the whole world freeze
Counting tin cans in our sleep
Submarines are diving deep
And don’t believe in me
– “Strange News From Another Star” by Blur
There’s a 94% chance that if you yourself don’t love the rain that I don’t love you at all.
Tonight I’m gonna have myself a real good time
I feel alive and the world I’m turning inside out
I’m floating around in ecstasy
So don’t stop me now, don’t stop me
Cause I’m having a good time, having a good time
– “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen
Of course, since then, Clifton’s been slammed a high number of times with dumpings of snow and it is no longer as exciting as it once was. Unless you’re six years old, and then it rocks because it definitely means one thing and one thing only: day off of school. Ah, nostalgia is washing over me as I type. Let’s end on this note then…
We’ve only got one chance to put this at an end
And cross the patron saint of switchblade fights
You said we’re not celebrities, we spark and fade
They die by threes, I’ll make you understand
And you can trade me for an apparition
– “Our Lady of Sorrows” by My Chemical Romance
Oh, that Momma Dukes! Weeks later, when I told her I’d be drawing a comic about this little conversation nugget, she had no recollection of ever saying it. Hmm. Someone needs to eat more blueberries. Or play Brain Age.
Question of the day: Would you rather be caught in the rain or buried in the snow?
It’s gonna take a lot of time
Before I can cross that finish line
And when I can’t take the fall
I really wanna make that call
