#330 – That Question

with 12 comments

You know, THAT question. The one I seem to get asked aaaaaaaaaaaaaaall the time. More times than not, something comic-worthy will happen and someone will ask if I’m going to draw about it. It is then at that exact moment that I decide I will not draw about it. I guess I don’t like being predictable. Or something. So yeah. There’s that.

Now on to an important manner. I gots me some fan art from Tara (see above), and I appear to have transformed into a handsome, young man:

This was another good moment from the night that I thought about drawing. I’ve decided that being indecisive is a-okay, Get it? Pffft, I thought that was funny.

NY Comic Con 2008 plans are almost final. Will update everyone for sure when I got it all settled. I know, I know. You all want to meet me.

So you can sit on chimneys
Put some fire up your ass
No need to know what you’re doing or looking for
But if anyone should ask
Tell them I’ve been cooking coconut skins
And we’ve been hanging out
Tell them God just dropped by to forgive our sins
And relieve us our doubt
La la la la la la la…

#329 – No Carding

with 13 comments

Three days until NY Comic Con 08. Still trying to figure things out. Hoping for the best. Weally, weally, weally hoping for the best. I got my fingers and toes crossed. Not my eyes, that gives me a headache.

Question of the Day: I know I’ll upset some people with this, but toooooo bad. When was the last time you were carded buying liquor?

To the opium den and the barroom gin
In the Belmont chair playing violins
The gambler’s face cracks into a grin
As he lays down the king of spades

#328 – Reader Responses

with 16 comments

So, I was looking at my scanned in line art for this week’s comics and I thought, “Hmm, if I color all of these it’ll take me all night long. If I just do black and white I can be done in 15 minutes and then spend the rest of the night farting around on the Interweb.”

Guess which option I picked.

Monday brought me some nice mail, which I conveniently placed on top of the not-so-nice mail:

I got my contributor copies for Kaleidotrope #4, which is publishing my short story “She’s a Hearth,” as well as a freebie from High Maintenance Machine since I entered his contest. Now to find a place to put that sticker…

I really really really really want to go to the New York Comic Con this Saturday, April 19th. Someone please go with me so I don’t have to take the ferry or train into the city by myself. If I end up doing that, I will most assuredly get mugged, shot, and then die all alone in a heap of trash. In that order. So please, you know you want to geek out with moi.

#327 – Three Random Tidbits

with 10 comments

Um, by “last night” I of course mean Friday night. Really, how can one not sleep well after watching some Battlestar Galactica? Don’t answer that. It’s rhetorical.

Happy Monday morning, hamburgers. How was your weekend?

This is where the summer ends
In a flash of pure destruction, no one wins
Go nuclear, nuclear
The violets in my eyelids goin’ red
Sentimental geek
Shut up and go to sleep

#326 – Elevator VS. Stairs

with 6 comments

This is a decision I have to make two times a day, five days a week…and boy is it a doozy. Yesterday, I went with the elevator and ended up getting stuck in the middle of two people having a deeply heated conversation about that viral video sweeping the web lately. You know, the one where the teenagers kidnap that girl and beat on her a lot. Well, I guess I’m not enough to stop their chit-chatting as they happily spoke through me. Ugh.

The stairs in my work building are quite narrow, which means if someone is running down behind you there are only two options: 1) make love to the wall so they can pass or 2) try and speed things up yourself, which can be dangerous and exhausting all at once. So, erm, yeah. These are the sorts of dilemmas that plague my daily existence. I know, you’re astounded.

Site-wise, I’ve added a section to the MyLifeComics sidebar for most recent comments. If any are interested, they can sign up with WordPress to upload their own avatar or can grab one free over at Maybe I might even draw a few this weekend that people can use…

Speaking of the weekend, what is everybody up to? Tonight is a new episode of Battlestar Galactica. Really, that’s all that matters to me. Eh, just kidding. I’d love to finish up some freelance work I have laying around the place. And then sleep. Sleep, sleep, sleep…

#325 – Getting Married

with 18 comments

I knew what the ring meant. I just wanted to hear Pamalamadingdong say it. Regardless, big congratulations to the both of them!

Today’s question: How many weddings have you been to in your lifetime?

My answer is…hmm, three. Maybe four, but that’s pushing it.

There’s a lot I will never do
Some fantastic, I know it’s true
But none as much as my want to be with you

#324 – Writing Irony

with 15 comments

You know, it’s odd how much I keep my writing life and my drawing life separate. One would assume they go hand-in-hand, like peanut butter and jelly, like mashed potatoes and gravy, like cheese and me.

Anyways, in 2005, I decided that, hey, maybe I’d like to give this writing thing a shot. I’d written for my college newspaper and independent magazine, studied journalism, and was forever constantly scribbling down story ideas in notebooks. I figured there was nothing to lose, and if I didn’t get anywhere from it then no biggie. Now, some three years later, I’ve sold over twenty-five short stories. Oh, I’ve written a lot more than that, but that’s another branch to break. Drawing and posting a comic is cool, if only for the instant feedback I can receive. Writing a story, submitting it for months, finally having an editor buy it, waiting waiting waiting, and then seeing my words in print…now that’s rewarding.

I never force anyone to read my work. Heck, I don’t even re-read anything I’ve gotten published. I know that no one is a bigger fan of me than me. No one cares more about my writing more than me. I’m not a huge bestseller on the NY Times list, with a thousand and one fans begging for more, more, more. I’m not the sort that resorts to self-publishing to get their work out into the world. I’m not at the point where I can quit my day job, move into a shack in the woods with a dog named Sam, and write for a living. But I am pleased. So there.

The situation’s always the same
You got your wolves in their clothes whispering Hollywood’s name
Stealing gold from the silver they see
But it’s not me

#323 – Haircut Signs

with 8 comments

…and so I got a haircut. I had my hobbity hair all cut off and then, feeling extra crazy, I shaved away my lady hypnotizer. That’s the beard, for you slower folks. I’m telling you, I look like a new man. Maybe I am one. Well, that means I need a new name, something that really jazzes the place up. How about…Paulo Dos Santos? I could be a cartoonist by day and a raging bull fighter at night. Think about it!

So now you shut off and you shut down
Won’t let nobody in
And when you shut off and you shut down
Won’t play that fool again

#322 – An Old Desk

with 8 comments

Ugh. I think only Kelly will really know what I’m talking about here, but WordPress has changed its whole dashboard layout and now I’m more confused than ever. DO NOT WANT, says the LOLcat.

Anyways, I’m sort of like an elephant…in that I work for food. Just not peanuts. Carrying a (pink!) desk down some stairs in exchange for dinner? Sure, sounds like a deal to me. Nom nom nom…

So, what was the last piece of heavy furniture that you moved?

#321 – New Band Names

with 8 comments

There were plenty more suggestions though now I can’t seem to remember some of them. I think two others were “I’m 24, You Can Tell Me” and “Malaysia,” but I will not swear to those. Oi. I doubt I can stop y’all from offering even more band names, so go ahead. Have fun. But I suspect I will stay with what I know. I mean, it’s not like I’m some mega-star headlining international tours. I’m just me. You know, Heavensday. Playing at teeny tiny cafes sometime in the near future…

Weekend plans, people?

I’m heading up to Pennsylvania tonight after work for the season premiere of Battlestar Galactica. Mmm. I CANNOT WAIT. Also, for those not in the know, here’s What the Frak?, an eight-minute recap of everything that has happened up to this point in the far-too-smart series. I totally forgot a lot of stuff from Season Two, especially the part where spoiler is taken to that spoiler and her spoilers are stolen by spoiler.

There’s wit and humor and explosions. Plus, lots of girl fights. Check it out, and then watch tonight on Sci-Fi! SO SAY WE ALL!
