#280 – Arizona Vacation, Part Ten

We make quite a comedic duo.

Not feeling well this morning so I’m just going to leave you with a favorite quote of mine about airports. It is from The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul by Douglas Adams (1991) and looks a little something like this:

It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on Earth has ever produced the phrase, “as pretty as an airport.”

Airports are ugly. Some are very ugly. Some attain a degree of ugliness that can only be the result of a special effort. This ugliness arises because airports are full of people who are tired, cross, and have just discovered that their luggage has landed in Murmansk (Murmansk airport is the only known exception to this otherwise infallible rule), and architects have on the whole tried to reflect this in their designs.

They have sought to highlight the tiredness and crossness motif with brutal shapes and nerve-jangling colors, to make effortless the business of separating the traveler forever from his or her luggage or loved ones, to confuse the traveler with arrows that appear to point at the windows, distant tie racks, or the current position of Ursa Minor in the night sky, and wherever possible to expose the plumbing on the grounds that it is functional, and conceal the location of the departure gates, presumably on the grounds that they are not.

I think he was talking about Heathrow Airport, but really…it could be about any of ’em.

  2. And such highbrow humor too. And the best airport I’ve been in is the one in Lincoln. It has two terminals with enough room for four planes. Typically half the airport is closed (meaning one of the terminals). Totally impossible to get lost there.

  3. ha! great comic, and it reminded me of one i meant to do about a trip to bed bath and beyond…will have to write that one down before i forget again.

sidenote: i despise airports. and airtravel actually.

the only airport i’ve ever kind of loved is Long Beach Airport in Long Beach CA, it is so laid back and cool…really small, the weather is always mysteriously awesome and nobody seems stressed out or bitchy. it’s great. when adam used to visit me in LA he’d often fly into Long Beach because it was cheaper and it was always such an idyllic experience…great memories of that. i still wouldn’t call it beautiful though 😉
